I use this simple formula that my 6th grade teacher taught me. It goes like this...

What is 40% of 57:

X= 40/100 * 57.

Thses are called "key words" in any percent problem change WHAT into "X" because it is unknown. Change IS into = because the word is is just another way of saying comes out to which is =. Change any percent into fraction form. All percents are out of 100, therefore the denominator (bottom number) will always be 100 so this percent is 40/100. Then simply bring down the 57.

Now, this equation says that in order to find x we need to multiple 40/100 * 57....

47 57 2679 79/100

---- ---- = ------- = 26

100 * 1 100

X= 26 and 79/100

However if your teacher wants your answer in decimal form, change that fraction into a decimal...

26 and 79/100 in decimal form = 26.79

Hope this helps!!
