∙ 13y agoBecause of changes made to the rules governing the Roman numeral system in the Middle Ages today we would write out the above numbers into Roman numerals as CLIX, CDXCIII, CXLIX and CXCIX respectively and to add them up in this format is almost impossible. But there is evidence to support the fact that the Romans would have probably wrote out these numerals in a simplified version as ICLX, XDIII, ICL and ICC respectively which would make addition a lot easier as follows:- ICLX+XDIII = DCLII (159+493 = 652) DCLII+ICL = DCCCI (652+149 = 801) DCCCI+ICC = M (801+199 = 1000)
