Well, it depends on which line you are talking about. The x-axis (or horizontal line) is called the abscissa. The y-axis (or vertical line) is called the ordinate. Is that the lines you were talking about?
No, this was a question in a crossword and I believe that they were talking about the line joining two points on the graph. After completing the rest of the crossword the only possible answer was ordinate. It just shows how some crossword compilers stretch their clues.
