If you mean Expression, then a math expression is any collection of numbers, variables, and operations with no given answer

Examples of Expressions:

2+2

2x+7

53+7f

Examples of what are NOT expressions (AKA, Equations):

2+2=4

2x+7=y

10x+7=0

The difference is all in whether or not you have a given answer on the other side of the "=". It doesn't matter whether or not it gives you the numerical value of it. So, a variable is still a possible answer to an equation to make it not an expression.
