one tends to approach the Limit upward and the other downward,but there is always a tendency to become in contact.
In a right triangle, the tangent of one of the acute angles is the side opposite the angle to the side adjacent to it.

In terms of sin and cosine it's the ratio of sin to cosine (or sin / cosine).
