We make a tree diagram if there are multiple ways to combine different things. For example, you could have two kinds of bread, three kinds of meat, and two kinds of cheese for a sandwich choice. A tree diagram lets you organize all of the possibilities and makes them easy to count and list. I can only use horizontal lines, but I'll try to show you.

white bread--ham--cheddar

--swiss

-- turkey--cheddar

--swiss

-- salami--cheddar

--swiss

The tree would look the same for wheat bread. So for white bread, there are six possible combinations of bread, meat, and cheese. There would be the same six combinations for wheat bread. Twelve combinations are possible, and you can easily follow the tree to list each one.

There's no fun in playing it safe. Why not try something a little unhinged?
