An octahedron is a closed 3-d shape with 8 polygonal faces. There are 257 topologically different convex octahedra. Each of these, being a different shape, has a different name. Some of the names are simple, for example,

  • a regular octahedron (also known as a square-based dipyramid or triangular antiprism)
  • heptagon-based pyramid
  • hexagon-based prism

but there are also names such as the tridiminished icosahedron or the gyrobifastigium.
