If you mean how to calculate your answer to scientific notation, then for example, if your answer in your calculator is
0.00004587
the you move the decimal place over til it passes the first number, in this case 4.
and because you moved it 5 places to the right, then you would write you answer
4.6 x 10-5 (10 to the negative 5)
if your answer was 458700000.0 then you move your decimal to the left and the answer would be 4.6 x 10+5 (10 to the positive 5)
