The square root of a number is any number that satisfies x in the equation x*x = y. In other words, 3 is the square root of 9 because 3 * 3 = 9. However, you might also notice that -3 would satisfy this rule as well. So square roots can be either positive or negative. A brief table of squares and their roots:

1 * 1 = 1
2 * 2 = 4
3 * 3 = 9
4 * 4 = 16
5 * 5 = 25
6 * 6 = 36
7 * 7 = 49
etc...

Remember that the negatives of these numbers are also square roots, as -2 * -2 = 4, and -5 * -5 = 25.

What is meant by a complex number?

A number of the form a+bi where a and b are real numbers and i is the square root of -1.

What is the principal square root of x?

Restricting the discussion to real numbers for now. In this case, the square root is only defined for non-negative numbers; the principal square root of a positive number is the POSITIVE square root. For example, both +5 and -5 are square roots of 25, since both - when squared - give you 25. But the positive square root (+5) is called the principal square root, and if you write the square root symbol, that's the number usually meant.

What is square root of a number?

The square root is the number which is times by itself, to get the square number.

Is the square root of a positive number an irrational number?

Sometimes the square root of a positive number can be irrational, as in the square root of 2 (which is a non-perfect square number), but sometimes it is a rational number, as in the square root of 25 (which is a perfect square number).

How do you square root in my maths?

What is the square root of a negative number plus the square root of a negative number?

Nothing. You cannot have a square root of a negative number. The square root of negative one is called i, but i is an imaginary number. It does not exist and does not follow the properties of real numbers. (For example, if a and b are positive, then the square root of a times the square root of b is the square root of ab. But the square root of -7 is not the square root of 7 times i.)

What is the square root of a square that has no root?

It's not a square if it has no root. If a number is a square then, by definition, it MUST have a square root. If it did not it would not be a square.
