Using a non-standard scale.
Science has generally agreed on a bunch of units grams, meters, joules etc to make up the "System International" or SI units. These should be used in a scientific context. They are based on Standards - for instance there used to be a stick in Paris which was defined as being a meter long all other meters had to be that length. They now use some trick with wavelengths of red light. Back on topic -
There are other scales in general use mostly for historic reasons. The "customary units" in the US for distance (miles, yards, feet and inches) and weights (Pounds and Ounces) being pretty common examples. Using these scales could be considered nonstandard if you were writing a scientific paper.
More likely nonstandard measure would be using a scale that is no ones standard. I could (and have) built a scaffold structure using units of "Rebecca" a nice girl who happens to be a good length to put scaffold floors apart. But I think you would have to consider her a nonstandard measure. The point being if you use nonstandard measure then people are not going to understand you since there is no common reference or "standard" to compare to.
standard. Because i can feel it.

A geiger counter is a measuring instrument, not a measure.
A standard form of measurement is one where there is widespread agreement as to its value. A non-standard measurement is one which makes sense to only a small number of people. For example, "as big as my garden" will only make sense to people who know me (or can Google my address).
Actually, about 3 countries use non-standard measurements - the SI is the international standard.

A non standard measurement is one in which the units are not normally used. This would be like saying something is four palms long, a palm equaling three inches.
The standard measurement of bedding is in inches.
6 millimetres is standard measurement!
standard of weight and measurement
There are 8 pints in a gallon in 'standard liquid measurement'.
There is no single, non-standard measure. One possibility is a span: a ball point pen could be around 0.6 to 0.8 spans - depending on the pen and your hand.
Cubits were used historically as a standard measurement in many ancient civilizations. However, nowadays they are not widely recognized or used as a standard unit of measurement in modern systems.
