One fourth of the co-ordinate plane between the axes is a quadrant. They are numbered anticlockwise using Roman numerals, starting with the quadrant bounded by the positive x and positive y axes.

In each of the quadrants the co-ordinates of a point have:

  • Quadrant I - positive x and positive y
  • Quadrant II - negative x and positive y
  • Quadrant III - negative x and negative y
  • Quadrant IV - positive x and negative y
