A set is a collection of things, called elements. These elements may be concrete or abstract (or a mixture) such that, in principle, at least, given any element it is possible to say whether or not it is in the set.

One reason for the "in principle" bit is the set of prime integers. People know what that means: there are clear, simple rules defining prime numbers. But given some huge number it may not be possible to determine if it is a prime.
