Its the very first double digit number. And very smallest double digit too.

It was the number of Maradona and its the number of Messi in football.

In cricket its the number of Sachin Tendulkar.

Nothing particularly except that humans have 10 digits (fingers and thumbs) and that helped them to count in tens. Other bases have been tried but the 10 has thrived, particularly with the spread of the metric system.

However, if everyone's numerical knowledge was erased and a new base for counting was sought, 12 or 16 would win hands down! 12 because of its divisibility. 16 because of computers (hexadecimal). 2 (binary) is too small.
