The ".338 Lapua Magnum" is a rimless bottleneck shaped cartridge that is designed for use in long range sniper rifles. It was released in 1989 and is still in use today.
A .325 WSM should be your smallest, or .308 with AP tip. The Ideal bullet would be a .220 grain ACT Winchester .338. Or a .338 Lapua Magnum
Your question is a bit ambiguous, so I'll go with the notion you're referring to the longest confirmed kill by a sniper. That was achieved with a rifle chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum.
It depends on the rifle. The .300 Winchester Magnum has a muzzle velocity in excess of 3000 feet per second (914 meters/sec). The .338 Lapua Magnum runs about 823 m/s (2,700 ft/s). The .50 Browning is in the same general range. All are handloaded for sniper use, so details may vary with the bullet weight and adjustments made for the particular rifle and scope.
They use the Accuracy International AW in 7.62x51, Stoner (Knight's Armament) SR-25 in 7.62x521 (the SR-25 is basically an upscaled AR-15, and was the basis for the US military's M110 Semi Auto Sniper System), Blaser 93 in .338 Lapua Magnum, and Accuracy International AW50 in 12.7x99 (.50 BMG)
I went to a gun dealer who I have gone to for 7 years. They had a nice new savage 300 Winchester 300 mag. It had a break which will cut back significantly on kick back. I have never found a much lower price than here. Now,this gun is new and it has the same stock as the new Savage 338 Lapua. The top of the Savage line in 338 is between $1,195 and 1,495. That is with one mag,no scope and the accu-trigger. The 300 Winchester mag has a base price of $1,995 without scope but it does have a brake which reduces the kick a lot. Comes stock . I was in a hurry so,I didn't get to get real familiar but the gin is very nice looking. It is heavy which means you need a tripod a sandbag,a rest to mount it on to use this gun. Few of us will ever get to use this gun for real asa 308 for most is poweful enough. This gun is for an enthusiast who has the passion and the dough to pay with a good scope(Night force for me) can do $3,500 in the end.
Yes however they tend to use explosive rounds All snipers may use explosive rounds - depending on the targets! The RAF Regt has snipers - they do exactly the same selection & training courses as British Army snipers. Answer: Explosive rounds? No. The RAF Regiment uses the Accuracy International L115A1 rifle chambered for .338 Lapua Magnum rounds. These rounds are NOT explosive.
"Best" depends on what you want to use it for. Hunting squirrels you will need a different scope than you would use for 100 meter benchrest shooting. Like most things, you will get what you pay for. The higher dollar scope is likely to be brighter, not fog up, hold a zero, and be more durable.
One that was designed for air rifles. Best will be determined by your intended use and how much you spend.
use da - and + keys (also _ and = keys)
.338
This question is much to broad to answer. As with the gun itself "best" depends on intended use, and user preference.
