Prime numbers can only be represented in a multiplication problem by one times itself. Composite numbers can be represented in more than one way.

2 is primes 1x2

4 is composite 1x4; 2x2
Prime numbers have only two factors whereas composite number have more than two factors.

Well, composite numbers can be divided by a number with no remainders and a prime number can only be divided by 1 and itself. For example: 3=prime=only 3x1=3. 9=composite=3x3=9.

A prime number has only 2 factors which are 1 and itself. Composite numbers are everything else except 1 and 0. 1 and 0 are neither prime, nor composite.
