I go to a grammar school, so I'm not sure what the levels are like in comprehensive schools, but at my school, in year 7, you are expected to: Gain a low six in Maths & Science; and, Gain a high five/low six in English. I gained a low 6 in science, a 6B in maths & a 7B in English!!!
In year eight, the government expects pupils to be a level 5a at English, Maths and Science. The exceptional pupils should be at a level 6b for English, a 7 at science and a 7/8 for maths. Hope this helps.

For most Colleges and Sixth forms a grade B is expected in Additional Science as well as core science. (I.e. grade BB). Also, you are often required to have achieved at least a B in GCSE maths and are frequently expected to take AS maths in conjunction with Physics because the courses are so related.
No but English and science are compulsary. However, most UK universities will only accept you if you have a level C+ in maths, English and science anyway.

No you have to do English at GCSE level as it is a core subject along with Maths and Science. You get 2 GCSE's for English, 1 for language and 1 for literature. But you don't have to do English for your A-Levels after your GCSE's.
