Opinions will surely vary; here is one possibility: some years ago, the Cray Institute of Mathematics has issued a reward for anybody who solves 10 math problems that have been unanswered for quite a while. The prize is a million dollars for each of the 10 questions; one of the questions has been solved recently, the others have not been solved yet.
