∙ 14y agoYou can use simple ratios to get the answer. Set up the ratio and then derive an algebraic equation from it that you can easily solve. Here's how.
In English: one inch is to 20 miles as ? inches is to 6.2 miles.
Using ratios: 1 : 20 :: x : 6.2
Note how you use an x to represent the question mark, that is, the unknown quantity. You could have used any letter or symbol, but x is the most common and most familiar.
Now, set up your equation and solve for x: 1/20 = x/6.2
Solving for x:
1/20 = x/6.2
20x = 6.2 (Use "cross-multiplication" to arrange the equation this way)
x = 6.2/20
x = 0.31 inch
So, a line that is 0.31 inch -- a bit less than one third of an inch -- represents a distance of 6.2 miles on your particular map.
OR
DIVIDE 6.2 BY 20
20 GOES INTO 6.2 EXACTLY ==.31
PRETTY EASY EH?
Yall SHUTUP!

1 inch represents 750 miles. A half inch represents 375 miles.

On that scale... 6 inches !
There's usually a "scale" that shows you the length on the map that represents a mile, or 10 miles or 20 miles, or kilometers.

Represents a scale of 1:12672000 ie 12 x 3 x 1760 x 200
The scale of the map is 1 inch represents 15 miles. This is calculated by dividing the actual distance (60 miles) by the distance on the map (4 inches).
The 1 inch to 200 miles is the smaller scale.
If 400 miles is represented by 1 inch, then 2.5 inches represents 2.5 x 400 = 1000 miles.
The length on the map that represents 80m with a scale of 1cm to 5m would be 16cm. To find this, divide 80m by 5m to get 16. Then, scale it down to one centimeter.

5 inches will equal 10 miles if the scale is 1 inch equals 2 miles

100 miles
1 inch equals 100 miles would be the smaller scale, as 1 inch on the map would be a plot of 100 miles of terrain, as opposed to 200 miles of terrain.
