Subregulus means 'deputy king'. In Anglo-Saxon England, during the end of the reign of Edward the Confessor, where he was growing old, he appointed Harold Godwin, at that time the Earl of Wessex and the most powerful English Earl, as subregulus. Because of this Harold Godwin had the power and responisbility of ensuring the defence of his liege's kingdom.
