In order to find out the median of a group of numbers you must count how many of numbers there are, add one, divide by two to find n, and the nth number in the group is the median.

In this case, there are 8 numbers. 8 + 1 = 9. 9/2 is 4.5

So the 4.5th number in the group is the median.

Since you can't have a 4.5th number, you take the average of the 4th and 5th numbers; in this case, 2 and 3. 2+3=5, 5/2 = 2.5

The median can be used to get an idea of the way a group of data is spread out. It is less influenced by outliers than the mean so it is more commonly used.
