In this case, there are 8 numbers. 8 + 1 = 9. 9/2 is 4.5

So the 4.5th number in the group is the median.

Since you can't have a 4.5th number, you take the average of the 4th and 5th numbers; in this case, 2 and 3. 2+3=5, 5/2 = 2.5

The median can be used to get an idea of the way a group of data is spread out. It is less influenced by outliers than the mean so it is more commonly used.

If there is an even amount of numbers and the two median numbers (in this case 3 and 4) are different, the median of the set is the mean of those two numbers.
