#1 ; convert to Improper Fractions ; Not required in this

#2 ; bring to a common denominator by multiplying the denominators together . ( 5 x 8 = 40 in this case )

#3 ; bring the numerstors to the equivalent valies. ( 3 becomes 3 x8 = 24 & 5 x 5 = 25 in this case).

#4 ; add the numerators ( 24 + 25 = 49 )

#5 ' place over the denomintor ( 49/40)

#6 ' bring back to a mixed fraction(number) 49/40 = 1 9/40

In mechanical terms it becomes

3/5 + 5/8

[3(8) + 5)5_] / (5 x 8)

[24 + 25] / 40

49/40

1 9/40 The answer!!!!!
