Y = X^2 - 6X + 8

set to 0

X^2 - 6X + 8 = 0

subtract 8 from each side

X^2 - 6X = -8

Now, complete the square by halving the coefficient of the linear term (6X), squaring it and adding it to both sides

X^2 - 6X + 9 = - 8 + 9

factor left side, gather like terms right side

(X - 3)^2 = 1

subtract 1 from each side

(X - 3)^2 - 1 = 0

vertex = (3,-1)

My TI-84 confirms this with original equation
