We can solve this without the use of a calculator using the 1% method. When we try to find one percent of any number, simply move the decimal point two places to the left.

Therefore 1% of 70 is .7. Now it' becomes a simple table and addition problem at this point.

  • .7 (1%) + .7 (1%) = 1.4 (2%)
  • 1.4 (2%)) + .7 (1%) = 2.1 (3%)
  • 2.1 (3%) + .7 (1%) = 2.8 (4%)
  • 2.8 (4%) + .7 (1%) = 3.5 (5%)
  • 3.5 (5%) + .7 (1%) = 4.2 (6%)
  • 4.2 (6%) + .7 (1%) = 4.8 (7%)

Now, notice that if we continue on using this same method, we're going to exceed 5. Now we need to utilize the .1% method. Which is simply moving the decimal place 3 decimal places to the left of the original number or moving the decimal point one place to the left on your 1% number.

Therefore, .1% of 70 is .07. We'll continue on with our table.

  • 4.8 (7%) + .07 (.1%) = 4.87 (7.1%)
  • 4.87 (7.1%) + .07 (.1%) = 4.94 (7.2%)

You should be able to tell by now that this is going to be a non terminating percentage. i.e. 1.1111111111...% and so on, it just continued. If you can get it as close as possible without going over or spending 5 hours tracking down the small decimals, you should we good. And 4.94 is as close to 5.00 as we can get without expanding the decimal.

Therefore we shall say, that 5 is approximately 7.2% of 70.

OTHER SOLUTION:

percentage = 7.14%

% rate:

= 5/70 * 100%

= 0.0714 * 100%

= 7.14%
