Ancient Greek amphitheatres were semicircular: a performance area with a semicircular area for the audience in front of it. Ancient Roman amphitheatres were circular or oval in shape with the audience surrounding the central performance area.

The viewing area in most amphitheatres was tiered, natural or man-made, so that those at the back had a relatively clear view of the performance area.
