Depends on the kid. For the most part, they should only know the basics: square, circle, star, heart, rectangle, triangle, oval. Once they get to school, they'll learn more. Don't worry about polygons, quadrilaterals, types of triangles (obtuse, acute, right, equilateral, etc.) or that stuff.
Some shows, like on PBS/Nick Jr., teach the shapes that you can count the sides. So, like: pentagon (5), hexagon (6), heptagon (7), octagon (8), nonagon (9), decagon (10), etc.
