Edema is commonly referred to a swelling. It most often occurs in a dependant extremity, such as hands and feet or lower legs. There can be many different reasons for this type of swelling. Medical professionals, when rating the severity of the swelling, refer to it as +1, +2 and so on. The higher the number, the greater the swelling. +4 would indicate much more swelling than +1.
