a thousand is spelled 'mille' in French. You never put a 's' at the end of mille, even when there are several of them.

- j'ai compté vingt mille personnes (I counted twenty thousand people)

But the noun 'millier' (a quantity of one thousand) takes the s as a plural mark: ils étaient plusieurs milliers (they were several thousand)
