When it has no squares (exponent of 2).

If an equation of one variable can be rearranged into a polynomial a*x^2 + b*x + c = 0, where x is the variable, and [a,b, & c] are constants and a does not equal zero, then it is a quadratic equation.

If it has more than one variable, or higher powers of the variable x, then it is not a quadratic equation. See related link.
