Scientific notation is a very convenient way to write large and small numbers and avoids having to write down so many zeros. It makes multiplying and dividing a lot easier.

For example, say you want to multiply 1000000 by 0.00001

That is 1 x 10^6 x 1 X 10^-5 and you addd the exponents of the 10 to get 10^1 = 1
