The Principality of Lüneburg was created in 1269 as a result of the division of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg.
It became one of several principalities formed by the partitioning of the duchy among the descendants of the Welf dynasty. Over time, it played a key role in the history of what would later become the Kingdom of Hanover.
