Depends on what kind of subs your getting because for your subs to sound properly and give you the best bass, there needs to be sufficient enough space behind the sub to allow the sub to displace air and thus create BASS!!.. The amount of space you need depends on what size of sub you have.. For example you need more space for a 12 inch sub then you do for a 10 inch sub.. Just look up specs for your subwoofer on google and you will see how much mounting depth it needs and buy a box that allows that space
