First of all 'pie' is the meat pie or apple pie that you eat at home.

The mathemtical 'pi' is as spelled; no. 'e'.

It is the Classical Greek small/lower case letter 'p' , and refers to 'proportion of specifically circles.

Going back before Classical Greece to the Sumerian Civilisation ) some 4000 years ago). It was noticed , that when as donkey/mule was tethered to a post to drive up water, the animal would go round in a circle.

The length of the tether (radius) and the distance around the circle ( circumference) were always directly proportional. It didn't matter how long the tether was or the circumference subscribed. the direct proportion between the two always remained the same. So the diameter the distance from one side of the circle to the other, through the centre pole is named 'd'.

Hence mathemetically expressed as

Circumference is directly proportional to diameter.

This is equated to

Circumference = k X diameter. 'k' being the constant of proportion.

So the Classical Greeks, when they became involved used 'pi' instead for protortion(p).

They also set about calculating a value for 'pi' and found it to be an IRRATIONAL number. An irrational number is one where the decimals go to infinity AND there is no regular order in the decimal digits.

You are probably given pi = 3.14 or pi = 3.1416 is school, but these values are only approximations.

The Classical Greeks, using 'pi' were able to calculate the circumference of the world to a very high degree of accuracy. It took Christohper Columbus another 1500 years to use this information, and prove the fact. But that's another story.

Modern 'Supa-Dupa' conputers have calculated 'pi' to 50 billiob places and still going.

In school , using 'pi' remember these circle equations.

C = pi d = 2 pi r

A = pi r^(2)

Hope that helps!!!!

How do you get the radius of the circle with the circumference?

divide the circumference by pie (3.14) and the answer would be the radius. for example circumference = 314 pie = 3.14 so 314 divide by 3.14 = 100 so the radius = 100
