For whatever help this is on 20 Aug 05, I am holding an Ithaca M49 which shows that the serial number is 9 digits long and stamped into the left front side, parallel to the barrel, and forward of the trigger in the action case. I hope this helps, Brad This is 28 Aug 05, my Ithaca M-49 has a 6 digit serial number, and is also stamped on the left front side, parallel to the barrel, and forward of the trigger. Dan The earliest (around 1962) models of the M49 Saddlegun didn't have serial numbers. The serial numbers were added to the lower left of the receiver in the later 1960s as required by the gun act of 1968. I don't recall the exact dates.

There is no H49 Ithaca. There is a M49, made for 17 years, single shot 22 cal worth $75 to $100. There is also a M49R, 22 cal repeater, tube fed. Made for 3 years worth $ 250 and more, sonetime much more.

I saw one for sale at a Florida gun show on Dec 13, 2008. It was the Presentation Model 49, lever rolling block style, single shot in 22 Mag, beautiful walnut stock, all in all a gun in 98% condition. It sold for $280 within and hour of the show opening.
