There are a lot of claims on this and its origin goes back to the Babylonians, but my vote goes to the Indian mathematician al-Khwarizmi around 700AD who applied the root word from Arabic "al-jabr", or how e we get "algebra". The word "al-jabr" means "what I do to one side of the equation I do to the other" and al-Khwarizmi taught this
