The Babylonians were working in math as early as 2000 BC and from them the Greeks inherited math. The Greeks were working on number problems as early as 1700 BC. Zeno of Elea's paradox led to atomic theory of Demetrius. The major Greek progress in math was from 300 BC to 200 AD. From Greece it spread to the Middle East. Math hits Europe in the 16th century.
