Because if you oversimplify your answer, you may not be able to differentiate between two different values. i.e. say your ruler only reads to 1 millimetre but all your samples are approx 5 millimetres and you cannot tell the difference. you need an instrument that will allow you to tell the difference. this is the same as if you have the instrument that allows you to get more accurate readings, then you report all of them as 5mm, when one of them is 5.4mm and the other is 4.6mm. There is large difference between them and because you simplify them you can't see that.
