Well although we live in a materialistic world, where items and inventory often mean more than friendship and trust, you are stereotyping the world as stingy and greedy. Although there will always be a greedy and selfish person around, some people are still generous.... Although the ever-decreasing minority of people are generous, it is safe to say that this world is money obsessed which some could argue is good for economics and the maintainance of the planet, whilst others would say that simple assets like an ability to share or a generousity within is all that is needed in society today.

All humans have the personality trait that could display as greed; it would be related to our innate drive to survive. Most people overcome the natural tendency by thinking of the other person/people because most of us learn early the value of others in our lives and sharing. You will notice that humans up to a certain age are naturally greedy and sometime around their second or third year are usually taught the value of sharing.
