A scalene triangle has three unequal sides, an equilateral triangle has three equal sides. An isosceles triangle has two equal sides.

Because with a scalene triangle only two sides are equal but with a equilateral triangle that would mean all sides are equal. (scalene = 2 sides & equilateral = all sides equal)
