Because when Ed was originally on the show, the show had a progressive jackpot that went up $10,000 every show they went without a million dollar winner. After a bad question that Ed actually answered correctly and the computer showed as incorrect, Ed wrote to WWTBAM and they invited him back to continue with a new question and the same jackpot that he was playing for on his original run.
