Some handguns hold 5, some 6, some 7, or more. With a revolver, the number of shots is dependent on the diameter of the cartridge, and the diameter of the cylinder they fit into. There is nothing magic about the number 6. I have a S&W Chief's Special- a very small .38 revolver, that is 5 shot. I also have a S&W Model 10, a much larger handgun. also in .38, that is 6 shot. But it has a larger cylinder.
