It is much easier to convert between measurement units. E.g. 1cm x 1cm x 1cm is a volume of 1 milliliter and if filled with water has a mass of 1 gram. 10cm x 10cm x 10cm is a volume of 1 liter and if filled with water has a mass of 1 kilogram.
You don't have to remember that 231 cubic inches is a gallon and weighs 8.33 lbs if it's water.

No problems provided they state which units. Most scientists are capable of converting between units.
"Please give your answer in SI units"
Because it was developed in Europe for international use from the French "Systeme International" (SI)
That is called the SI (international system). And it's not just scientists - most people all over the world (with the notable exception of the United States) predominantly use SI units in daily life - with some exceptions. For example, most people use degrees Celsius for temperature, whereas the SI unit for temperature is the Kelvin.
