Because Clay falls off of the edge off the edge of the cavern in different places around the cavern, due to weathering. Then, as limestone is being brought into the cave, also by weathering, clay goes throught the weathering process and then though becomes in an unusual shape.

The limestone caverns themselves are formed by groundwater gradually dissolving the limestone rock. In this process, some of the limestone is taken into solution, and under favourable conditions, it will form a drip on the roof of a cavern. This may eventually build to form a stalactite above, and perhaps also a stalagmite below it.
Caverns are formed through a process of chemical weathering and erosion of soluble rocks, such as limestone, by percolating water. Gradual dissolution of the rock over time creates underground voids that eventually expand to form caverns. Additional factors like tectonic activity and the presence of natural faults can also contribute to cavern formation.

Caverns that form in limestone areas, due to rain water dissolving the limestone over millions of years, produce stalactites and stalagmites. Stalactites are icicle-like rock formations of deposited limestone hanging down from the cavern's roof. Stalagmites grow upwards from the cavern floor, due to the limestone solution dripping on the floor from the roof. In some cases, the stalactite and stalagmite joins in the middle to form a column.
Some of the tourist attractions in Shenandoah Valley include the Dixie Caverns, the Skyline Caverns, the Cedar Greek Battlefield Foundation, and the Newtown History Center.
Most caves are in limestone or dolomite rocks. Some (e.g. Carlsbad Caverns) are in gypsum rocks. But caves can also exist in lava deposits (e.g. lava tube caves), marble rocks (i.e. metamorphosed limestone), and many other types of rocks at lower rates, depending on various variables.

Limestone gets its name from the Latin word "calx" which means lime. Limestone is primarily composed of the mineral calcite, which is a form of calcium carbonate. The name reflects the mineral composition and the fact that it often contains high amounts of lime.
There are several unique attractions in the Calaveras County. Some of them include the Mercer Caverns, the Moaning Caverns, New Melones Lake and Sierra Nevada Logging Museum.
Two types of limestone are chalk, which is a soft, white sedimentary rock composed of the skeletal remains of marine organisms, and travertine, which is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, often found in caves and near hot springs.
