Because it's easier to use. Every unit is divisible by 10. It's designed for used with the decimal point. The last I heard, there are only 3 countries (U.S., Liberia, and Burma) in the world that don't use the Metric system. It is used exclusively in science because of the fact it is easier to use. Even the U.S. uses the metric system in science and medicine.
