Sometimes engineers use either scientific or engineering notation, although you are correct that most of the time engineering notation is used. The reason for this the use if greek letter prefixes for quantities. Very often large and small quantities are expressed as micro, mega, giga, nano, and so on. These terms relate to engineering notation in multiples of 1000 or 1/1000. It is a very convenient shorthand not only in writing but also while speaking.

How much does the sun weigh in scientific notation?

It is not appropriate to talk about the weight of astronomical objects. Rather, you should ask about their mass. The Sun has a mass of about 2 x 1030 kg.

What is an exponental notation?

Exponential notation would be somthing such as 34 rather than 3x3x3x3

Are Scientific notation is a way of making numbers scientific?

Scientific notation is a useful way of dealing with very large and very small numbers. It allows them to be presented in a form where their magnitude can be seen more easily. Also it can simplify calculations by allowing you to concentrate on the significant digits rather than the orders of magnitude which are very easily dealt with. This latter advantage has somewhat diminished with the widespread availability of calculators and computers. But previously people used log tables and slide rules for multiplication and division. These calculating devices depended on thinking of numbers in their scientific notation.

Where do you see scientific notation in everyday life?

Scientific reports that refer to very large or very small numbers will use scientific notation. Howvwever, the notation is less common in everyday life. Having said that, media reporting monetary values in millions (or billions, trillions), or populations are implicitly using a related concept. These are based on powers of a thousand rather than ten.

What is the benefit of writing number in scientific notation?

Ask yourself. Would you rather write this out in long hand? 234,000,000,000,000,000,000 ----------------------------------- Or this? 2.34 X 1020 -------------- Let alone adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing the first long number.
