A 24-hour clock reduces the possibility of confusion and errors that can occur using "AM and PM" times. Military times are expressed as four digits, such as 0830 meaning 8:30 AM, or 2030 which is 8:30 PM. When a time is 1300 or greater, you can subtract 1200 from it to identify it as a PM time.

Not just the military, but such businesses as transportation (airlines, trains) and computer processing companies use a 24-hour clock internally, and convert them to AM and PM for their customers. Many also use a worldwide standard time (UTC or Zulu time) which always identifies the same time in any time zone around the world. This also reduces confusion over the exact time an event occurs or is scheduled to occur.
