Because they designed it that way! No space wasted and easier cabin space utilization for seats or floor loaded cargo compared to a circular fuselage which is usually found on pressurized aircraft and I believe the flat belly also contributes a bit to produce lift and further enhance the extraordinary STOL performance of this magnificent aircraft.
