Any number raised to the zero power is equal to one.

consider following:

2 ^ 2=4

2 ^ 1=2

2 ^ (2-1)= (2 ^ 2)/(2^1)=4/2=2

Similarly:

2^(1-1) = (2^1)/(2^1)=2/2=1
