A triangular pyramid, i.e. a pyramid with only 4 faces and each face a triangle, is called a tetra-hedron. this is because the word tetra-hedron (Greek in origin) has the following meaning:

tetra = 4

hedron = faced

so a tetrahedron is a four-faced object - the only four faced object is the triangular pyramid.
