Because you have to give your patients the proper dosages of medicines based on their age and weight, so you have to be able to figure that out. Plus you have to read a blood pressure cuff sometimes, or a thermometer, if digital ones are not available, such as in a poor country or if the electricity goes off temporarily. You have to put the proper amount of medications and fluids in your patients' IVs, which also requires math. Some math errors by nurses can cause death or serious harm to their patients, so it is necessary to know math well before becoming a nurse. If you gave a child a dose of medicine that was meant for an adult, you could kill them, for instance. Or what if you have an obese patient who needs more medicine because of their size?
