Silting is a great problem because it makes the river bed shallower so river channels would hold less water. And the floods are frequent in these areas.

What is silting of a port?

Silting refers to the build-up of silt on the bottom of the harbor or port. This build-up or silting will reduce the effective depth of the harbor or port, and dredging will have to be conducted to remove it to restore depth to the port. Silting results from the emptying of a river or waterway into a bay where the port is located, or it could result from the action of tides and/or currents in the ocean. Any of these represent the action of moving water, and when water moves, it can carry with in any number of things, including fine sediment that settles out as silt.

How does afforestation reduce silting?

Afforestation, planting more trees, stabilises the soil, preventing erosion by water and even landslides. This means that rainfall is more likely to seep into the ground, rather than washing the soil into rivers and streams where it becomes silt.

What country is troy in?

I presume you mean the ancient city of Troy, as in "Helen of..." If this is your question it is thought to be in Turkey. Near the coast on the western part of Asia Minor. Because of the change in climate and the river near Troy silting up, the city is now several miles inland, not on the coast as mentioned in Homer's story of Troy.

What made the irrigation system clog up with silt?

Any flow of water used in irrigation will pick up and carry along soil particles. It is these particles that may settle out and clog up the system. Therefore, this silting up must be occasionally manually removed to restore irrigation.

What is silting of tankss?

It depends on what tanks the question is about? Assuming a water tank, water entering the tank will have a certain amount of sediment, even tap water. The sediment may be so fine as not to be obvious. But, over time, the sediment may form a scum lining the tank and valves. Periodically, the tank needs to be emptied and cleaned out.

What is desilting pipe?

Silt in pipes is caused by solids suspended in liquids, that are flushed through the drainage system, settling in the pipe-work. This can be caused if there is a lot of solid matter flushed through the pipe system or if the flow is too slow or has too many turns causing the flow to been restricted (which in turn allows the solid particles held within it time to fall to the low point in the pipe). De-silting is carried out through either high pressure jetting or exposing the affected pipe-work and physically cleaning out. Silting can occur in other pipe systems, as well as drains, but depends on what the plumbing system is carrying. Hard water areas (high level on degrees Clarke) may need acid descale etc.
